CEDIA Certification establishes clear, objective standards for knowledge in residential electronic systems design and installation. Certification was introduced in 2003 to meet the growing need for quality standards within the industry.

The 4 Certification levels are:

  • EST2 - (technical school)

    The baseline technical certification for anyone working within the residential custom integration industry. Knowledge gained during studying for EST2 is essential for continuing onto further study of CEDIA certification levels.
    Suitable for: installers with up to 2 years experience and delegates starting out in the industry .
    Entry requirements: EST1 Boot Camp Course preferred
    Exam: 3 hours, 125 multiple choice questions.
  • EST 3 – Advanced Installer

    Suitable for
    : technical team leaders, site managers and advanced installers.
    Entry Requirements: EST2 Technical School (previously called Installer Level 1) plus online pre test.
    Exam: 3 hours, 150 multiple choice questions.
  • Designer Level 1

    Suitable for
    : designers of integrated residential systems.
    Entry requirements: Pass EST2 Exam plus online pre test.
    Exam: 4 hours, 200 multiple choice questions.
  • Home Cinema Design Specialist

    Currently the highest level of CEDIA Certification. Only for highly experienced designers of engineered reference level home cinemas.
    Suitable for: experienced designers of reference home cinemas, on application
    Entry requirements: Designer Level 1 exam , plus successful completion of online test
    Exam: held over 2 days

Maintaining CEDIA Certified Status

Certification is valid for 3 years after which time; individuals can retake the test or obtain 30 CEU’s (continuing education units) through further training to maintain their CEDIA Certified status. Courses are available to prepare delegates for the exam but some prior knowledge is required for all levels.

CEDIA Membership requirements

As part of the continuing drive for higher standards within the residential custom installation industry, CEDIA encourages its Members to attain CEDIA Certification, and as such promotes any companies employing CEDIA Certified Staff on the CEDIA Member 'Finder Service' at www.cedia.org. This Certified status can be achieved by success in either the CEDIA EST2 Certification exam, ESD1 Designer Level 1, EST3 Advanced Installer, or Home Cinema Design Specialist examinations.
