New to the industry? Acquire the vital knowledge and skills necessary to get started in the residential electronic systems industry with CEDIA’s Boot Camp. This comprehensive five-day session is delivered by CEDIA Certified Instructors, and includes both classroom instruction and hands-on training.

The course will provide attendees with the skills required to build a foundation for a successful career as a technician, designer, or even business owner within the home technology industry.

As a business owner, this is the ideal first course for new employees. The courses will provide the knowledge and skillset required to be a useful member of the installation team from day one. The course will also teach the engineering and technical foundations necessary for an individual to go on to CEDIAʼs five-day technical school, and the ESC-T certification exam.

The course is split into five days as follows:

Day 1 – Health & Safety

CEDIA is now an accredited ECS (Electrotechnical Certification Scheme) Health and Safety assessment centre, and this one-day course is designed to help attendees understand the necessary site competency skills needed within the industry.

Topics covered include:

  • Ladders and Steps, rooftop safety and harness use
  • Practical scenarios on Working At Heights elements
  • Manual Handling practical session
  • Asbestos Awareness specifics & questionnaire

Day 2 - Essential Technical and Personal Skills for Installers

Ideal for new installation technicians, this course will provide attendees with the essential training in the typical maths, science and electronics installers will have to utilise within the home technology industry.

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding and manipulating formulae
  • Working with triangles, percentages and ratios
  • Waves, frequency and wavelength
  • Electricity and electrical theory
  • Tools, PPE and other equipment needed
  • Avoiding client problems through effective communication

Day 3 - Cables, Connectivity and Structured Wiring Workshop

The need for a proper cabling infrastructure is essential in any custom installation project. This workshop will show attendees the various cables and connectors used in integrated residential systems, and demonstrate how to build a future-ready wiring environment.

Topics covered include:

  • Recognising the various cables and connectors
  • How various cables and connectors are used
  • Recommended connector termination methods
  • Practical exercises with various cables and connectors
  • The basics of structured cabling systems
  • Using patch panels and wall-plate modules
  • Basic testing methods for structured cabling

Day 4 - Audio, Video and RF Systems for Installers

For many installers audio and video represent a large percentage of each project. This course brings together these fascinating topics to deliver the ideal grounding for installers of up-to-date home entertainment.

Topics covered include:

  • Display functions and technologies
  • Interlaced vs. progressive pictures
  • Video scaling
  • Dynamic range considerations
  • Loudspeaker varieties
  • Sound processing and amplification
  • The RF spectrum
  • Frequency and wavelength relationships
  • RF system components
  • RF distribution methods
  • Basic RF system design

Day 5 – Rack Building and Wiring Fundamentals

This course will provide attendees with the clear, structural methodology required for rack building from planning through to future servicing. 

Topics covered include:

  • Rack elevations, kit spacing and ventilation. (best practices for loading and kit spacing including ventilation of racks)
  • Cable tray, rear rack strip and lacing bars.
  • Tails, rear panels and hardwiring.
  • Cable and signal paths.
  • Service loops and cable lay.
  • Cable ties - tightness, flush cut, spacing and flow.
  • Lacing pre-made cables.

There will be opportunities during the course for individual questions and topic reviews. There are a maximum of 12 places available on this course. Hours will be from 09.30 to 17.30.
