CEDIA EST2 Technical School & Exam

Networking Theory and Practice

Next date: 9th Oct 2012 - 3 day course
Location: Birmingham City University
Spaces available: 11

TCP/IP has become the dominant communications and media transmission protocol for our industry. It is essential that everyone who works in the technical side of our industry understands both the theory and practice of IP. In addition, with wireless infrastructures being asked to handle ever more demanding applications, it is also critical that these are designed and implemented in a robust and reliable fashion.

To meet these demands, CEDIA has created a three day program of courses. NEW this year is that these courses will be taught at Birmingham City University in their extensive CISCO labs, by CISCO Certified trainers. These facilities and trainers are the best available and will give attendees exposure to and practice with a range of CISCO enterprise grade hardware.

By the end of the course, attendees should be able to implement TCP/IP connected hardware in 95% of the situations encountered in a residential environment.

The course takes place at Birmingham City University's CISCO laboratory facility in Birmingham, UK

Testimonials

"Golden nuggets of information have been invaluable. It takes us to the next level in terms of our network skills - The level that our clients now expect!"
Dave Nelson - Smart Living Designs

"This is so fundamental to our industry. Anyone who wants to approach IP with any professionalism should take this course"
Alex Trude - Firefly Automation

"Invaluable for today's modern CI installer"
Paul McKen - Futro Systems

The course is split into three days as follows:

Day 1 - IP Theory and Practice

This day has been created to meet the demands of anyone who requires a comprehensive foundation in the topic. It is also suitable for anyone who wishes to take their on site practical experience and formalise it from an engineering perspective.

At the end of the day, participants should be able to:

  • Correctly define an IP addressing scheme for a project
  • Successfully enter IP and network information into a device according to the addressing scheme
  • Perform basic troubleshooting tasks on LANS (defined by a subnet mask of either 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.0.0)
  • Correctly configure a Router for Internet access and DHCP across a LAN
  • Evaluate if their IP and Networking skills set meets the requirements of the task

Day 2 - Network Security, Segmentation and Remote Access

This course has been created as either a follow-on from the CEDIA IP Theory and practice course (Day 1), and looks at Network Security, segmenting the network for performance and remote access from The Internet. At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Explain Port Address Translation and VPNs together with their applications for accessing a LAN from The WAN
  • Configure a router for NAPT
  • Configure a VPN end-point for remote access
  • Explain the reasons for network segmentation and sub-netting
  • Configure a switch and router for network segmentation using VLANs

Day 3 - Wireless Networking Workshop

802.11x wireless networks have become pervasive both for streaming data as well as allowing control of equipment. Often unpredictable and rarely straightforward it is becoming essential that installers and designers alike who work in the technical side of our industry understand both the theory and practice creating reliable wireless networks. This course has been created for anyone who needs to understand the design and implementation of wireless networks At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Explain different wireless technologies and select the correct hardware
  • Perform wireless surveys and correctly position Wireless Access Points
  • Configure Wireless Access points correctly for best performance in both single access point and multiple access points environments
  • Explain wireless security methods and correctly implement security on a range of wireless devices

Using a combination of teaching by CISCO Academy Instructors, and hands-on workshop sessions working in small groups thethree day course will introduce, explain and allow delegates hands-on experience with a range of networking product. The course will run from 09.30 to 17.30 each day and is limited to 12 participants.

This three day course covers all the IP and Wireless Networking content necessary for the CEDIA EST2, EST3 and Designer Level One Certification Exams.

Included in the cost of the course is:

  • 3 Days of teaching and practical hands-on workshops taught by CISCO Academy Instructors
  • Networking Fundamentals book
  • A Course Workbook
  • Refreshments and Lunch during the course
