CEDIA Certification


Introduced in 2003, CEDIA Certification establishes clear, objective standards for knowledge within the home technology industry.

There are three certification levels with recommended (but not exclusive) education pathway for each:

ESC-T (Technician)

This certification is aimed an on-site installation and commissioning staff. Recommended preparation includes:


CEDIA Bootcamp

The first part of the City & Guilds accredited Smart Home Technician track, CEDIA’s Bootcamp course is the ideal starting point for junior installers or those new to the industry. Attendees will understand the basic fundamentals required for any professional to excel within the home technology industry.

Suitable for: Those new to the industry, junior installers


Technical School

The baseline technical certification for anyone working within the home technology industry. Knowledge gained during studying for ESC-T is essential for continuing onto further study of CEDIA certification levels.

Suitable for: installers with up to 2 years’ experience and delegates starting out in the industry.

Entry requirements: Boot Camp Course is advised

Exam: 2 hours, multiple choice questions.


ESC-N (Networking Specialist)

Aimed at those who design and install IP networks. Recommended preparation includes:


Networking School

The final step in completing the City & Guilds accredited Smart Home Technician track, ESC-N incorporates g a combination of classroom teaching and hands on workshops to ensure attendees gain the vital experience required to manage a wide range of networking products in a professional environment.

Suitable for: Installerswith up to 2 years’ experience and electricians

Entry requirements: Bootcamp and/or ESC-T

Exam: 2 hours, multiple choice questions.


ESC-D – (Designer)

This certification is aimed at those who design fully integrated smart home systems. It is highly recommended that students undertake and pass the ESC-T certification prior to taking the ESC-D courses and certification exam.

Preparation for the ESC-D certification includes:


Designer School

An essential step in successfully completing the City & Guilds accredited Smart Home Designer track, ESC-D will formalise attendees existing knowledge and focus on developing a structured, scalable and profitable design methodology.

Suitable for: Senior technicians with up to 3 years of experience

Entry requirements: Technical School and/or Bootcamp

Exam: 2 hours, multiple choice questions.

Maintaining CEDIA Certified Status

Certification is valid for 3 years after which time; individuals can retake the test or obtain 30 CEU’s (continuing education units) through further training to maintain their CEDIA Certified status. Courses are available to prepare delegates for the exam but some prior knowledge is required for all levels.


CEDIA Finder Service

As part of the continuing drive for higher standards within the home technology industry, CEDIA encourages its members to attain CEDIA Certification, and as such promotes any companies employing CEDIA Certified Staff on the CEDIA Member 'Finder Service' at www.cedia.org.
