Course overview

Students who have completed the basic Residential Networking course are now ideally placed to study this more advanced course, which builds upon the knowledge and skills previously gained.

With residential networks becoming more complex, it is vital that home integration engineers fully understand and can confidently install networks that are robust and secure.

Topics covered include:

  • File sharing between IP connected devices
  • Remote access with Dynamic DNS
  • The client-server model
  • 'Ports' and 'Services'
  • Access to LAN devices from the WAN via Port Forwarding
  • Securing external access using VPNs (Virtual Private Networks)
  • Understanding basic subnets
  • Diving Networks using vLANs (Virtual LANs)
  • Configuring network segmentaion
  • Multicasting/broadcasting, flooding and storm control, RSTP
  • The roles for hardware, software and wetware
