Integrated residential electronic systems design is a skill set that is core to every company working in the home technology industry. This five-day course, will formalise attendees existing knowledge and focus on developing a structured, scalable and profitable design methodology.

The course which make up CEDIA’s Designer School is suitable for individuals who are either CEDIA ESC-T certified, or who have at least three years industry experience. It is also excellent preparation for the CEDIA ESC-D Designer certification exam.

With a combination of classroom and group discussion, attendees will gain the knowledge and experience holistic integrated systems design. In all areas, an emphasis will be placed on developing a structured, scalable and repeatable design methodology that is focussed on profit.

The course is split into five days as follows:

Day 1 – Introduction to CAD Design

This one-day course has been designed to give you a basic understanding of many of the essential AutoCAD drawing commands and skills necessary to use Computer Aided Design software in your business.

Topics covered include:

  • Introduction to CEDIA and course agenda 
  • Introduction to CAD: The concept, what we use it for 
  • How it works: Lines, arcs and circles, layers and limits 
  • Layers: How the layers should be used 
  • Survey: Draw-up the survey plan - walls, windows and doors 
  • WBlocks: Symbol libraries and setting out 
  • 3D Models. x, y and z points in space
  • Printing: It's no good if we can't send it to the client 
  • Q&A / wrap up

Day 2 - Customer Relations and Needs Analysis

Attendees will explore the stages of dealing with customers, and the role of the designer in the initial client meetings process. During the course, attendees will have the opportunity to write up quote and design scope based upon working examples of client briefs.

Topics covered include:

  • Understand the designer and the client process
  • Collate needs analysis information
  • Write up and deliver quotes and scope documents
  • Understand the customer relations interface

Day 3 – The Principles of Project Management

Day three of designer school focuses solely on project management exploring the time, cost, and quality triangle within the context of the home technology industry. Attendees will be able to identify the key elements required to successfully deliver a project on time, in budget and within scope.

Ideal for those who are new to project management, this course will enhance professional project management knowledge all the way to degree level.

Topics covered include:

  • Understand the principles of project management
  • Identify cost, time, and quality constraints on a project
  • Understand the role of the project manager on a CI project

Day 4 – Design Process and Documentation

This course will explore in depth and understand the documents that make up a successful project from architectural plans, schematics, wiring schedules, change order forms and specifications to final client sign off.

Topics covered include:

  • Understand the design documentation package
  • Design and draw a simple audio visual head end
  • Understand the project process documentation
  • Define the project scope document

Day 5Sub Systems Design and Integration

This course will take a deeper look at all of the sub systems that make up a typical CI project. Attendees will learn each systems components, communications and demarcation points in order to design, install and programme jobs successfully to practical completion.

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding individual sub systems
  • User interface design
  • Understand inter system communications protocols
  • Understand the principles of third party integration

There will be lots of time during the week for individual questions and topic reviews. There are a maximum of 12 places available on this training track. Hours will be from 09.30 to 16.30.
